How Long Does It Take to Set Up a GCC in India? Real Timelines
4 min read
A partner-supported GCC reaches go-live in 12 to 24 weeks. A self-managed wholly owned captive takes 12 to 18 months from decision to stable operations. Inside those totals, entity registration runs 45 to 90 days, senior leadership hiring runs 3 to 6 months, and a senior-weighted first cohort of 50 takes two to three quarters to fill. Every one of these numbers deserves a 30 to 40 percent buffer before it reaches a board deck.
The gap between the two headline timelines is not paperwork speed. It is who already knows the road.
The stage-by-stage clock
Entity and compliance: 45 to 90 days. Name reservation, incorporation via SPICe+, PAN, TAN, GST, bank account, FEMA reporting of the parent's investment. With clean documentation this is routine. The delays that happen come mostly from the US side: apostilles, KYC on signatories, and board resolutions moving at board speed. FC-GPR filing within 30 days of share allotment is the deadline most often missed.
Leadership: 3 to 6 months, and start it first. The GCC head search should begin before, or in parallel with, everything else, because leadership quality drives an estimated 60 to 70 percent of outcomes and the head's network accelerates every downstream hire.
Companies that sequence "entity first, leader later" buy themselves a quarter of drift.
Facilities and infrastructure: 6 to 12 weeks in parallel. Grade A space, fit-out, IT and security setup. Rarely the critical path if started early; frequently the critical path when started late.
First cohort: two to three quarters for 50 senior-weighted hires. Payroll and statutory infrastructure must be ready before the first offer letter, since the New Labour Codes (in force since November 2025) shape offer structures, and retrofitting payroll after hiring creates churn.
Why partner-supported runs 12 to 24 weeks
An enablement partner is not moving the registrar faster. They are removing the first-timer tax: pre-built entity and compliance playbooks, standing recruiting engines in the target city, facilities relationships, and a payroll stack that exists on day one.
The 12-to-24-week figure is real and widely achieved. What it covers is go-live, meaning entity, space, leadership, and the first working team, not full target headcount, and any partner implying otherwise is selling the smaller number as the bigger one.
The buffer rule
Add 30 to 40 percent to every estimate above before presenting it. Companies that plan six-month setups routinely stand at month fourteen with 40 percent of seats filled, and the miss is almost never one big failure. It is four small slips compounding: a visa here, a counteroffer there, a fit-out delay, a filing returned for correction.
Presenting the buffered plan costs you nothing at approval and saves the program's credibility at month nine.
